Common Questions
How do I get started?
With Clever (schools): Teachers should start by adding Humdrum from the Clever Library. After that, teachers and students can launch Humdrum through Clever without creating separate accounts. Returning school users can also use "Log in with Clever" from Humdrum. If your district uses Clever Library (Instant Login), district-level approval covers compliance and you won't see a separate consent prompt.
With an email account (families): A parent or guardian creates an account using their email address. After verifying with a one-time code and confirming consent, you can create up to 5 writer profiles for your kids.
As a guest: Click "Continue as Guest" and complete the adult attestation form. A teacher, parent, or guardian must confirm they are supervising the student's use before the account is created.
What are Side Quests?
Side Quests are short, guided writing adventures that teach creative techniques like simile, metaphor, alliteration, and more. Completing a Side Quest unlocks a Writing Power — a skill the app then tracks as your child uses it in their own writing.
What are Writing Powers?
Powers are creative techniques your child has learned through Side Quests. Once a power is unlocked, Humdrum's detection system notices when your child uses that technique in their writing. The more they use it, the more the power levels up. It's about identity — showing kids what kind of writer they are.
Does Humdrum use AI?
Humdrum uses AI to detect creative writing techniques (like simile, metaphor, and alliteration) in your child's writing. This is how Writing Powers level up. The AI analyzes writing in real time and discards it immediately — no writing is stored, logged, or used for training. Kids never interact with AI directly. For full details, see our Privacy Policy.
How do I reset a student's account?
Contact us at hello@noticehumdrum.com with the student's pen name and your account email. We'll help you resolve any account issues.
Can I export my child's work?
Yes! Teachers, parents, and families can request data exports at any time. Contact us and we'll provide a complete export of your child's writing within a few business days.
How do I delete student data?
Schools, teachers, and parents can request deletion of student data by emailing hello@noticehumdrum.com. We'll process deletion requests within 30 days in accordance with our Privacy Policy.
Is Humdrum COPPA compliant?
Yes. Humdrum requires adult consent before any student data is collected:
- Clever users (schools): Teachers confirm authorization from their school when setting up their classroom. For Clever Library (Instant Login) users, district-level approval serves as authorization.
- Email accounts (families): A parent or guardian provides consent during signup, before any child data is stored.
- Guest users: A teacher, parent, or guardian must confirm they are supervising the student's use.
All consent records are logged for audit purposes.
